We have reached the final stretch of the year—the closing weeks of 2025. Some of you are
still finding your rhythm in Malta after recently arriving, while others are now settled
and beginning to see this island as a home away from home. Wherever you are, this moment
invites us to pause, take stock of the months behind us, and prepare for the new chapter
that 2026 will bring.
December naturally ushers in a festive atmosphere defined by family gatherings, abundant
food, chocolates, and the excitement of gift-giving. Regardless of the faith you follow,
the season carries an unmistakable sense of warmth, laughter, and connection. As staff,
this is also a time to recognise the courage each of you demonstrated when choosing to
leave your loved ones and step into a new academic and personal journey with us here at
Ascencia. We commend your resilience, and we appreciate the trust you continue to place
in us as partners in your growth. Even when perspectives differ, our intention remains
unwavering: to provide the guidance, support, and safe space you deserve.
Beyond our school community, the festive spirit is palpable across Malta. Village streets
and the capital city come alive with lights—transforming the island into something that
feels remarkably close to the North Pole . As a predominantly Catholic nation, December
is closely tied to the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, and Malta’s churches
prepare diligently for this season. You may wish to visit the live crib in the town of
Għajnsielem on the island of Gozo—now a staple attraction during the holidays .
Christmas in Malta is not only rooted in faith but is also fundamentally about sharing
meaningful moments with family and friends. Naturally, these gatherings often unfold around
tables filled with festive dishes—whether lunches, dinners, or office celebrations. For
those with curious palates, here are some signature Maltese culinary highlights that define
the season:
1. Roast Meats Lunches
Families often anchor the meal with roast turkey, pork, or sometimes rabbit. These are
usually positioned as the centrepiece, supported by rich gravies and winter vegetables.
2. Imbuljuta tal-Qastan
2. Imbuljuta tal-Qastan
A classic Maltese chestnut-and-cocoa drink served hot after Midnight Mass. It’s thick,
comforting, and treated almost as a “signature warm-down beverage” for the season.
3. Qagħqa tal-Għasel
A treacle ring pastry with spiced, dark honey-like filling. It’s a heritage dessert that
tends to be deployed early in December and remains in rotation through the holidays.
4. Timpana
4. Timpana
A hearty baked macaroni pie—crowd-pleasing, uplifting, and often central to large family gatherings.
5. Pudina tal-Ħobż
(Bread Pudding)
A resourceful dessert combining stale bread, cocoa, spices, and citrus zest. It’s seen as
a sustainability-driven classic—zero waste before it was trendy.
6. Christmas Log
(Maltese Style)
6. Christmas Log
(Maltese Style)
A no-bake chocolate-biscuit log with almonds or cherries. This is an import-turned-local
staple, and it often plays the role of a flexible dessert you can showcase in any
setting.
There’s something for every taste, and we hope you’ll be on the lookout for these delicious
treats—just to make sure they find their way into your tummies!
On that sweet note, as the holidays draw near, take a moment to look back on everything
you’ve achieved this year—your milestones, your growth, and all the lessons along the way.
Whether you’re spending the break with family, friends, or your new community here in Malta,
we hope you enjoy all the little moments of joy that make this season so special.
From the bottom of our hearts, we wish you all a relaxing and joyful holiday! Have fun, take
care of yourselves, and we look forward to welcoming you back refreshed and full of energy
in 2026!
To more memories and milestones
Ascencia Team
This month’s spotlight is shining bright on one of the true stars of our school – our
Academic Manager, Gianluca. As the mastermind behind all the planning for our Higher
Education students, his job is anything but easy, yet he handles it like a pro. With the
help of his fantastic team, he makes sure every single student gets the best possible
learning experience at our school. And yes, sometimes that means stepping in as the
“strict
one,” keeping everyone on track, reminding students of the rules and code of conduct. It
may
not always win him a popularity contest but remember – he’s doing it because he
genuinely
wants to see you cross that final finish line: Graduation!
Among colleagues, Gianluca is famous for his lightning-fast wit, great sense of humour,
and
his legendary stickers – no one is truly safe from those! No matter how urgent the
situation, you’ll never catch him panicking; his style is to stay cool, think clearly,
and
offer a smart, practical solution to any “crisis” that pops up. That calm approach rubs
off
on everyone and helps steady the ship. He’s also a fountain of wisdom, the kind of
colleague
you go to when you need to bounce around ideas, see things from a new angle, and walk
away
having learned something.
So, let’s raise a big Christmas cheer for our brilliant Academic Manager – a
quick-witted,
level-headed Head of Department, colleague, and friend. We’re all proud to work
alongside
you!
The holidays are the perfect time to hit the pause button, recharge, and come back in
January feeling refreshed and ready.
Here is a simple “Holiday Reset” you can try during your break.
Pause
Each day of the holidays, choose just 5–10 minutes to fully switch off from school, social media, and obligations. Use this time to do something genuinely calming: enjoy a hot drink, listen to relaxing music, or simply sit quietly and notice what’s around you
Ground
During your pause, take a moment to notice three things you can see, three things you can hear, and three things you can feel (like the warmth of a blanket or the chair under you). Then take 5 slow, deep breaths, and with
every exhale imagine letting go of one piece of school stress you’ve been carrying.
Intend
Before you go back to your day, choose one small action that will help you recharge: a short walk, a nap, reading for fun, drawing, or spending time with someone who makes you feel good. Think of it as an investment in your energy, so you return after the holidays more rested, focused, and ready to learn.
